Spring training roundup: Max Scherzer solid in Jays debut

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer made his Blue Jays debut Tuesday, striking out four over two innings of one-run ball in Toronto's 3-2 victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals in Dunedin, Fla.

Ahead of his 18th season, the 40-year-old right-hander -- who signed a one-year, $15 million deal earlier this month -- allowed one hit and no walks and threw 20 of his 34 pitches for strikes.

In relief of Scherzer, Bowden Francis tossed two innings and allowed a solo homer in his first spring outing. Alejandro Kirk, Andres Gimenez and Michael Stefanic each notched an RBI single.

For St. Louis, Victor Scott II belted a solo shot and Alec Burleson lifted a sacrifice fly. Starter Quinn Matthews whiffed three in two scoreless frames.


Orioles 8, Tigers 7

In his Baltimore debut, Charlie Morton tossed a scoreless inning in a victory over visiting Detroit in Sarasota, Fla.

Morton, 41, who signed for one season -- his 18th -- at $15 million in January, gave up two hits and no walks. Jeremiah Jackson capped a four-run eighth with a tiebreaking RBI single while Heston Kjerstad and Enrique Bradfield Jr. each belted two-run homers.

Detroit's Riley Greene and Ben Malgeri (three RBIs) each smacked two-run shots and Kerry Carpenter went 3-for-3.

Astros 8, Mets 5

Cam Smith hit his first two spring home runs and drove in three as Houston came back to defeat visiting New York in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Victor Caratini put Houston ahead for good with a solo blast and finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Starter Ronel Blanco had a tough spring debut, giving up five hits and three runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Jose Siri and Brett Baty cracked their first spring homers, both solo shots, to highlight the Mets' 11-hit output.

Braves 6, Red Sox 1

Marcell Ozuna smashed his first home run of the spring, a two-run shot, to help lead Atlanta over visiting Boston in North Port, Fla.

Former Red Sox catcher Sandy Leon also homered for Atlanta, which got a two-run single from Conner Capel. Starter Reynaldo Lopez tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his spring debut.

Boston outfielder Roman Anthony, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, collected an RBI single. In his first spring outing, Sean Newcomb delivered two scoreless innings and struck out three.

Phillies 5, Rays 4

Carson Taylor went 2-for-2, including a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning, as Philadelphia edged host Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Phillies starter Christopher Sanchez whiffed three over two scoreless innings in his first outing this spring, and Edmundo Sosa notched a two-run single.

Curtis Mead hit an RBI double and scored on Jose Caballero's single for Tampa Bay. Starter Taj Bradley had a solid spring debut, yielding one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless frames.

Braves 2, Pirates 1

Starter Spencer Schwellenbach fanned a pair over two scoreless innings in his first spring start, helping Atlanta top host Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla.

Jake Marisnick and Bryan De La Cruz each collected an RBI single for the Braves, whose staff limited the Pirates to just five hits.

Joey Bart contributed an RBI groundout and Ke'Bryan Hayes added two hits for Pittsburgh, while starter Jared Jones tossed two scoreless frames in his spring debut.

Twins 5, Yankees 4

DaShawn Keirsey Jr.'s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled Minnesota over visiting New York in Fort Myers, Fla.

Ty France and Harrison Bader ripped solo homers and Matt Wallner added a two-run blast for Minnesota. In his spring debut, starter Simeon Woods Richardson gave up a solo shot and fanned two in two innings.

In his first Yankees outing, starter Carlos Carrasco allowed one run and two hits in two innings. Everson Pereira swatted a solo shot and Dominic Smith smacked a two-run blast.

Nationals 14, Marlins 7

Andres Chaparro belted a two-run homer and drove in four as part of Washington's 14-hit attack in a win over host Miami in Jupiter, Fla.

Robert Hassell III hit a two-run shot and Jacob Young added a solo drive for Washington, which had 13 players notch at least one hit.

For Miami, starter Edward Cabrera was touched for three runs on four hits in his one-inning spring debut. Matt Mervis smashed a two-run home run and Derek Hill delivered a solo homer.

Cubs 4, Diamondbacks 2

Carson Kelly and Vidal Brujan hit solo shots in the fifth inning to tie the game and host Chicago went on to defeat Arizona in Mesa, Ariz.

Pete Crow-Armstrong scored the go-ahead run for the Cubs in the sixth when he stole second, took third on a throwing error by D-backs catcher Rene Pinto and scored when Cristian Pache compounded the error in center field. Cody Poteet (1-0) allowed one run on two hits in two innings of relief.

Geraldo Perdomo went deep and Connor Kaiser added an RBI for the Diamondbacks. Yordin Chalas (0-1) was tagged with the loss for one unearned run.

Royals 15, Rangers 6

Eight players had two-hit days as part of Kansas City's 22-hit attack in a high-scoring win over host Texas in Surprise, Ariz.

Tyler Tolbert (solo) and Luke Maile (three-RBI) had home runs for the Royals, and Nick Pratto had a two-RBI double and a run-scoring walk. The Royals took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the second, letting starter Seth Lugo (1-0) cruise to victory. Lugo yielded three runs on four hits over two frames.

Leody Taveras hit a three-run homer as the Rangers racked up 13 hits of their own. Starter Kumar Rocker (0-1) gave up four runs on four hits in one inning of work.

Brewers 9, Guardians 6

Jake Bauers hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Jared Oliva added a solo shot later on and visiting Milwaukee held off Cleveland in Goodyear, Ariz.

Jacob Misiorowski (1-0), the first of 10 Brewers pitchers, got the win despite giving up two runs on three walks and a hit in the bottom of the first. Cooper Pratt went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

The Brewers feasted on Guardians starter Luis Ortiz (0-1), who allowed six runs on six hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings. The Guardians scored once in the eighth and added Travis Bazzana's three-run bomb in the ninth to narrow the final margin.

Mariners 11, Dodgers 5

Samad Taylor's two-run double ignited a six-run seventh inning for visiting Seattle in a victory over Los Angeles in Phoenix.

Mitch Garver homered earlier in the game for the Mariners, and starter Luis Castillo (1-0) went 1 2/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk.

Miguel Rojas and Kody Hoese finished with two RBIs apiece for the Dodgers. Reliever Carson Hobbs (0-1) yielded four unearned runs in 2/3 of the second inning on four hits and a walk.

Athletics 7, Giants 5

Eight of the host Athletics' 11 hits were doubles in a victory over Bay Area rival San Francisco in Mesa, Ariz.

Shea Langeliers and Gio Urshela each hit two doubles, while Logan Davidson and Nick Kurtz finished with two RBIs apiece. Anthony Maldonado (1-0) got credit for the win for getting one out in the sixth after A's starter JP Sears threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

Christian Koss went 2-for-2 with two runs and hit a two-run homer in the ninth to slice a 7-3 deficit in half. Cole Waites (0-1) gave up Kurtz's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth for the loss.

Angels 2, Padres 1

Jose Soriano threw two innings of one-hit ball to start Los Angeles off strong and the visitors squeaked two runs across in the eighth to beat San Diego in Peoria, Ariz.

Bryce Teodosio brought home Denzer Guzman on a sacrifice fly for the game's first run, and Nelson Rada was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Shaun Anderson (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth.

Gavin Sheets hit a run-scoring groundout in the bottom of the ninth, but that's all the Padres could muster. Jacob Higginbotham (0-1) was responsible for both Angels runs on a hit and three walks.

Rockies 14, White Sox 3

Cole Carrigg punctuated an eight-run eighth inning with a three-run shot as host Colorado broke the game open against Chicago in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Carrigg finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and Kris Bryant added a home run to the Rockies' 15-hit barrage. German Marquez tossed two hitless innings to start before Austin Gomber (1-0) handled the next two with one hit; they combined for five of the Colorado staff's 16 strikeouts.

It was a 14-1 game before Dominic Fletcher hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the White Sox. Jairo Iriarte (0-1) was Chicago's pitcher of record, pitching two innings of relief and giving up two runs on Bryant's homer in the fourth.
