Chicago Cubs right-handed pitching prospect Cade Horton earned his third MLB victory on Tuesday evening against the Washington Nationals. In this start, Horton tossed 5 1/3 innings of three-run ball with six hits and one walk. He struck out three. Horton allowed his first run of the game in the opening frame on an RBI single by Luis Garcia Jr. Later in the third, CJ Abrams and James Wood would bring in the other two runs via an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly. Over his first four MLB starts, the top pitching prospect in the Cubs' system has posted a 3.74 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP across 21 2/3 innings. During this stretch, Horton has struck out just 14 batters but showed strong command, allowing just five free passes. Earlier this season at Triple-A, Horton was very effective, posting a 1.24 ERA with a 0.86 WHIP in 29 innings of work. Given his strong control, he is worth a look in deeper 12+ team leagues. He is slated to make his next start this weekend against the Detroit Tigers.
From RotoBaller
Washington Nationals infield prospect Brady House continues to approach his MLB debut. On Tuesday evening, the No. 97-ranked prospect in the sport on MLB.com, went 1-for-5 with a home run during their contest against Worcester. This performance extended House's current hitting streak to five games. Since May 2, House has been one of the most productive hitters at the Triple-A level. During this stretch, the former 11th-round pick has held a .296/.342/.546 line with nine doubles, six home runs, and a 27:7 K:BB. After posting a modest .250/.280/.375 line across his first 54 games at Triple-A last summer, House has taken a significant step forward in his development. If the 22-year-old continues to perform well, he should be in the mix to join the majors before the end of the month. He is a strong stash candidate in all 12+ team leagues.
From RotoBaller
Detroit Tigers infield prospect Kevin McGonigle continued his incredible start to the season at High-A. On Tuesday, McGonigle posted his sixth-straight multi-hit contest. He went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. He is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak. During this stretch, he posted seven multi-hit games and tallied three or more hits in a single game twice. Through this stretch, McGonigle has posted a near-perfect .563/.650/.938 line with six doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, and a 2:8 K:BB. He has posted a remarkable 1.587 OPS over this stretch as well. He dealt with a right ankle sprain during the opening month of the season, but it has clearly not affected his production. Fantasy managers in dynasty formats should continue to monitor his development as he is quickly ascending prospect boards.
From RotoBaller
Philadelphia Phillies infield prospect Otto Kemp continued to swing a hot bat at Triple-A. On Tuesday evening against Charlotte, the infielder went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. This was his second home run over his last four games. This was also his third-straight multi-hit contest and fourth-straight contest tallying at least one hit. Through 55 games this season with Lehigh Valley, Kemp has been one of the most productive hitters at the Triple-A level, holding a stellar .324/.417/.616 line with 19 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs, and 10 stolen bases. He received a brief look at Triple-A last season but tallied just nine hits across a 13-game stint. Fantasy managers in 14+ team leagues should continue to view Kemp as a viable stash candidate. If he continues this current pace, he should get the call to Philadelphia early in the second half of the season.
From RotoBaller
Cleveland Guardians first base prospect C.J. Kayfus went 1-for-4 with a home run during their contest against Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. This was Kayfus' third-straight tallying at least one hit and adding at least one RBI. However, he was riding a 10-game power skid entering Tuesday's contest. The 23-year-old opened the season with Double-A but needed just 18 games to prove he was ready to move to the top level of the minor leagues. At Double-A, he held a stellar .364/.475/.591 line with four doubles and one home run. Through his first 28 games at the Triple-A, Kayfus has looked quite comfortable, posting a .327/.397/.570 slash line with seven doubles and five long balls. Given his impressive start to the season, Kayfus remains on track to make his MLB debut later this summer.
From RotoBaller
Baltimore Orioles catching prospect Samuel Basallo went 2-for-5 with two home runs during their contest against Triple-A Louisville. This was Basallo's second-straight game going deep and his third multi-home run game of the campaign. Through 36 games at Triple-A this season, the 20-year-old backstop has flashed elite power upside. He has gone deep 12 times and added six doubles. He has posted a .937 OPS, which is much higher than the .637 OPS he held during his first stint at Triple-A last season. Basallo is currently considered the No. 16-best prospect in the sport and the top prospect in the Baltimore system. Fantasy managers should continue to closely monitor his progression as he could be in the mix to join Triple-A in the coming weeks. For now, he is worth stashing in all deeper two-catcher leagues.
From RotoBaller
New York Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon continued his terrific stretch on Tuesday, tossing seven one-run frames in a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Rodon scattered five hits and a walk while striking out eight in this one. The 32-year-old is having one of the best stretches of his career right now, and everything seems to be clicking for him. He sits at 8-3 with a 2.49 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 98 strikeouts in 79 IP. That's all you can ask for from any pitcher, and certainly from one drafted outside of the top 100 like Rodon was. He is a clear must-start pitcher for the foreseeable future, although one could argue selling high right now would be the shrewd move. His next start should come on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox at home.
From RotoBaller
Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. had a sorely needed big game on Tuesday, going 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in a 10-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Witt Jr. smacked a two-run shot in the first inning and then plated two more with a single in the fifth. The 24-year-old superstar hasn't been elite with the bat for a while now, but this performance could lift that weight off his shoulders. Even with the relatively disappointing start, Witt Jr. still has a .287 AVG with 32 runs, seven homers, 35 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. It's still high-end production, but Witt Jr. has another level that he hasn't hit yet this season. If (when?) he does, watch out.
From RotoBaller
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen was dominant once again on Tuesday, shutting out the Texas Rangers for five frames in a 5-1 win. Rasmussen was electric in this one, allowing just one hit and walking none while punching out eight. It was his fourth straight outing without allowing a run, a stretch of 23 innings. The only negative is that the Rays haven't extended Rasmussen at all this year, with his most pitches thrown being 86. The 29-year-old will have to remain uber-efficient in order to keep racking up quality starts and wins, which can be a tight line to walk. Still, he's been excellent at that so far this year, going 5-4 with a 2.14 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, and 56 strikeouts in 63 IP. Rasmussen should be rostered and started in all leagues right now. His next start is a juicy one, as he gets the Miami Marlins at home on Sunday.
From RotoBaller
Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs in a 6-5 extra-inning victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday. Muncy hit his first homer in the first inning, a two-run shot to extend the Dodgers' lead to 4-1. His second homer was much more important, as it came with L.A. down by one in the bottom of the ninth and sent the game to extras. Muncy has been on an absolute surge at the plate lately, homering five times in his last four games and collecting 11 RBI in that stretch. Overall, Muncy has a .230 AVG and .781 OPS to go along with 19 runs, nine homers, 35 RBI, and two steals in 183 at-bats. When healthy, Muncy is still a very solid source of power and counting stats. He should be rostered in all standard-size leagues.
From RotoBaller
Minnesota Twins utility man Willi Castro had another multi-homer performance on Tuesday, hitting two solo shots in a 10-3 win over the Athletics. Castro had another two-homer outing last Friday, so he now has four homers in his last five games. The 28-year-old has been swinging a hot bat even outside of the multi-homer performances, and he is now up to a .261 AVG with 25 runs, six homers, 12 RBI, and three swipes on the season. He's not a must-roster player, but Castro is a streaky hitter who can do some damage when he's hot, making him a decent option in deep leagues.
From RotoBaller
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes had another fantastic start on Tuesday, throwing eight one-run innings in a 3-0 loss against the Houston Astros. Skenes allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. The 23-year-old has now rattled off five straight starts of six-plus innings and one run or less, and has allowed more than three runs only once this season. He now has a 4-6 record with a 2.05 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 85 strikeouts over 83 IP. Skenes has lived up to his billing as one of the best pitchers in fantasy, even with his lack of wins due to a poor Pirates lineup. He will make his next start on Sunday at home against the Philadelphia Phillies in what will be a tough matchup.
From RotoBaller
Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Tuesday that he expects starting pitcher George Kirby (face) will be "OK" after getting hit in the face by a line drive in a 5-1 loss to the Orioles. Wilson said that Kirby was able to get his hand on the baseball before it hit his face and that the Mariners should know more on Wednesday. Fantasy managers should keep an eye out for more news as to whether the 27-year-old will take his next turn in the rotation at the Angels. He has only made three starts this season due to right shoulder inflammation, so it remains to be seen if the Mariners take extra precautions with him.
From RotoBaller
Arizona Diamondbacks infield prospect Jordan Lawlar went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and four RBI in a Tuesday night victory against Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 22-year-old returns to Triple-A after not picking up a hit in 19 at-bats in the majors, but has continued to tear up Triple-A pitching. Lawlar owns a monster .341/.419/.591 line with seven homers and 13 stolen bases on the season. There isn't much left for Lawlar to prove in the minor leagues, and it is unfortunate there isn't a clear runway for everyday playing time currently in Arizona. He remains a decent stash in case of an injury, as he still possesses the upside to be an impact bat.
From RotoBaller
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (elbow) looked just fine in Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Blue Jays after missing the last week of games due to being hit by a pitch in the elbow. Batting third, Harper went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two walks. The 32-year-old went back-to-back with Trea Turner against Bowden Francis in the first inning, lofting a splitter just over the right-field wall for his ninth long ball of the season. Harper has been a bit disappointing offensively this season by his standards but is still slashing a respectable .268/.380/.463 with 34 RBI and eight stolen bases in 245 plate appearances. The good news is that he picked things up in May after a slow March and April, so he has been trending in the right direction.
From RotoBaller
Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep took the loss in an 8-4 loss against Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. He allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four. It was a disappointing outing from Waldrep from a control standpoint, as it was his first start allowing four or more walks since April 25. Tabbed with a 70 grade splitter out of Florida, Waldrep threw the pitch only five times out of 87 pitches tonight. The 23-year-old has mostly struggled at Triple-A, with a 5.33 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, and a 56:30 K:BB. The injuries continue to mount in the Braves' rotation, but it still would seem unlikely that Waldrep is called upon anytime soon.
From RotoBaller
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano turned in another strong outing in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Mariners. Sugano pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits (including a solo home run) and a walk with five strikeouts. The 35-year-old veteran has settled into his first season with MLB, going 5-3 with a 3.04 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and a 5.07 K/9 rate in 12 starts and 71 IP. His strikeout numbers are very low, although fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised given how he pitched throughout his career in Japan. The good news is that he has limited baserunners, allowing him to pitch deep into games. Seven of his 12 starts have lasted at least six IP. Sugano's next scheduled matchup will be a middling one at a hot Athletics lineup in Sacramento.
From RotoBaller
Toronto Blue Jays infield prospect Orelvis Martinez went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI against Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. The 23-year-old bounced back to a solid .811 OPS in May after a miserable April when he slashed .147/.237/.279 with a 39.5 percent strikeout rate. The whiff rate is still high at 37.2 percent, and his batted ball metrics are decent, with a 40.6 percent hard-hit rate and 8.5 percent barrel rate. He's flashed impressively high exit velocities in the past, but there is a lot of swing and miss. There's a good chance we'll see Martinez up with the Blue Jays as we get into the summer. In which case, he'd make for a deep league or AL-only add.
From RotoBaller
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Pablo Lopez (shoulder) exited Tuesday's start against the Athletics before starting the sixth inning with right shoulder tightness, per Baseball America's Jessica Kleinschmidt. Lopez threw one warmup pitch and then exited the game to be replaced by Cole Sands. He had allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts on 72 pitches. He also hit a batter. Fantasy managers should wait for more news after the game to better understand the potential severity of his injury. Lopez did miss large chunks of time earlier in his career due to various shoulder injuries. It would be a shame for the Twins and fantasy managers if he were to miss any more time this season, as he has gone 4-3 with a 2.82 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 9.05 K/9 rate in 11 starts and 60 2/3 IP.
From RotoBaller
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman/outfielder Addison Barger continued his impressive streak in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Phillies. Barger went 2-for-4 with a single, a two-run home run, and a strikeout. He also made a throwing error in right field. The 25-year-old turned on an eighth-inning Max Lazar fastball, launching it over the left-field wall. Barger has now homered in each of his last four games, bringing his season total to six. He has emerged as a source of power and batting average for fantasy managers, slashing .274/.338/.508 with 19 RBI in 136 plate appearances. He hasn't seen much playing time against left-handed pitchers, but he is currently just 26 percent rostered and has hit so well that he could provide a boost to fantasy managers' lineups even if he doesn't always play against lefties.
