Mark Canha Sat Feb 22 10:40pm CT

Free-agent veteran outfielder Mark Canha signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training on Saturday with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman. Canha will join an already crowded outfield group in Milwaukee after splitting the 2024 season with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. In a combined 125 games played, Canha slashed .242/.344/.346 with a below-average .690 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, seven stolen bases and 46 runs scored in 462 plate appearances. The 36-year-old was also traded to the St. Louis Cardinals but sprained his right thumb late in the year and didn't play at all for them. At best, Canha will probably be on the weak side of a platoon in Milwaukee if he manages to make the big-league roster. Canha's plate discipline has always been his strong suit, but as a long shot for an everyday role, he'll have limited fantasy upside, if any at all.

Hyeseong Kim Sat Feb 22 7:00pm CT

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Hyeseong Kim is expected to see work in center field during spring training. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic noted that Kim would also continue to see opportunities at second base and shortstop. The team views Kim's speed as a potential positive in center field. He would also provide them with a left-handed bat in center field for lineup construction purposes. The 26-year-old saw work in the overseas outfield but only in the corners. Earlier in the offseason, Kim signed a three-year $12.5 million contract with the Dodgers. Last season in the KBO, Kim held a .326/.383/.458 line with 11 home runs and 30 swiped bags. Fantasy managers should expect Kim to see most of his work at the keystone but could receive occasional starts in center field. When Kim is not in center field, Tommy Edman or Andy Pages will likely get the starting nod.

Nolan Arenado Sat Feb 22 6:50pm CT

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Houston Astros have begun to rekindle trade talks for third baseman Nolan Arenado. Earlier in the offseason, the third baseman refused to waive his no-trade clause to go to Houston. However, it appears the Astros have begun to express interest in a trade once again. Feinsand noted that Arenado may be inclined to join Houston as they brought in first baseman Christian Walker, who was not on the team yet when they first attempted to acquire Arenado. The Cardinals have expressed interest in shedding payroll throughout the offseason and have actively searched for a trade partner for Arenado. However, they were unable to get a deal done prior to spring training. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor Arenado's status. If he were to get shipped to Houston, he would cover the hot corner, which would shift Isaac Paredes to the keystone and Jose Altuve to left field. Last season in St. Louis, Arenado held a .272/.325/.394 line with 16 long balls.

Michael Kopech Sat Feb 22 6:40pm CT

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Michael Kopech (forearm) threw off the mound earlier on Saturday. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic noted that the right-handed pitcher is expected to "touch the mound" for a brief session on Sunday as well. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring Kopech's status throughout camp, as he may miss the start of the season. Earlier in the offseason, Kopech was unavailable due to right forearm inflammation. However, seeing the 28-year-old begin to throw off the mound is a positive sign. Last season, the Dodgers acquired Kopech from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline. With the Dodgers, Kopech held a stellar 1.13 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP across 24 innings of work. He tallied 29 punchouts and six saves. When cleared for action, he should have a high-leverage role and compete for save opportunities.

Brayan Bello Sat Feb 22 6:30pm CT

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello (shoulder) is still not throwing bullpens. Manager Alex Cora noted that Bello will not pitch in games for at least a week. The 25-year-old was shut down from throwing earlier this month due to soreness. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status throughout camp. If he remains sidelined, he could be in danger of missing Opening Day. Last season, Bello held a 4.49 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP across 162 1/3 innings. He tallied 153 strikeouts and showed poor command of his pitches as he served up walks at a high 9.1 percent. However, he did generate ground-balls at a strong 51.3 percent rate. In addition to Bello, starting pitchers Kutter Crawford (knee) and Lucas Giolito (elbow) are also battling injuries and could miss Opening Day. If Bello were to be sidelined for an extended period, Quinn Priester, Cooper Criswell, or Richard Fitts could see starting opportunities early in the season.

Blake Mitchell Sat Feb 22 6:20pm CT

Kansas City Royals catching prospect Blake Mitchell (wrist) suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand and will miss at least the next 4-to-6 weeks. Mitchell will undergo surgery sometime in the coming week. Mitchell was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. He received a brief look in the Rookie League during the 2023 season. Last summer, Mitchell opened the campaign at Single-A, where he spent most of his time. Across 106 games, the backstop posted a .238/.376/.429 line with 16 doubles, 18 home runs, and 25 stolen bases. He held a 79:142 BB:K ratio. He was then given a brief look at High-A, where he tallied two hits across five games. When the 20-year-old is cleared for action, he will likely return to High-A and is several seasons away from his MLB debut.

Andres Munoz Sat Feb 22 6:10pm CT

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Andres Munoz is working on a changeup. During his recent bullpen session on Saturday, Munoz showed off a changeup that had a 10-inch vertical drop. Munoz relies heavily on a slider and four-seamer and occasionally mixes in a sinker. Last season, the right-hander held a 2.12 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP across 59 1/3 innings of work. He tallied strikeouts at an elite 33.2% percent rate. He also generated a strong .198 xBA and a 54.0 percent ground-ball rate, both well above the average marks and placed him in the 98th and 92nd percentile, respectively. If Munoz can develop this changeup, he could become an even better pitcher with an even higher strikeout upside. Fantasy managers should view Munoz as a high-end option for saves and strikeouts in all formats.

Lucas Sims Sat Feb 22 2:10pm CT

Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher Lucas Sims is set to throw live batting practice on Sunday. Sims signed a one-year $3 million contract with the Nationals earlier this week and is slightly behind schedule. However, seeing him set to take the mound on Sunday should put him in a good position to be ready for Opening Day. Last season, the 30-year-old held a 4.38 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP across 49 1/3 innings. He split time with the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox. During the 2023 campaign, the 30-year-old held a 3.10 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP across 61 innings. During that season, he tallied an impressive 72 punchouts. Fantasy managers should expect Sims to compete for a high-leverage role in the Washington bullpen. In addition, with the team lacking a true closer, he could eventually earn save opportunities.

    J.B. Bukauskas Sat Feb 22 2:00pm CT

Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher J.B. Bukauskas (lat) suffered a significant lat injury. Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted that the right-handed pitcher is deciding between surgery or rehab. The 28-year-old was only able to log six innings in the majors last season due to numerous injuries and could be in danger of missing a significant period of time in 2025. Across this limited stint, he posted a 1.50 ERA with a 0.67 WHIP. During the 2023 season, he logged seven innings in the majors and held a similar 1.29 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. Across 80 2/3 combined innings at Triple-A, the 28-year-old has held a 3.35 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. When healthy, fantasy managers should expect Bukauskas to compete for a spot in the bullpen.

Wilyer Abreu Sat Feb 22 1:50pm CT

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (illness) is still ill and unable to take the field. Abreu was able to do some work on Friday, but manager Alex Cora noted, "There's still something there." Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status, but the 25-year-old still has ample time to return to action before Opening Day. After appearing in just 28 games during the 2023 season, Abreu logged a career-high 132 contests during the 2024 season. Abreu held a .253/.322/.459 slash line with 33 doubles and 15 home runs. He swiped eight bags. Abreu generated an elite 50.5 percent hard-hit rate and drew walks at a strong 8.9 percent rate. When healthy, fantasy managers should expect the 25-year-old to be deployed on the strong side of a platoon in right field.

    From RotoBaller

Kutter Crawford Sat Feb 22 1:30pm CT

Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Kutter Crawford (knee) may not be ready for Opening Day. The right-hander has been battling patellar tendon soreness. He recently completed a bullpen session on Friday but is still behind schedule. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during camp, but he may face an uphill battle to ramp up in time for Opening Day. This injury popped up sometime in the offseason. When healthy, Crawford is expected to operate in the back half of the starting rotation. If the 28-year-old were to miss time early in the campaign, Cooper Criswell or Richard Fitts could be given starting opportunities. Last season, Crawford held a 4.36 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP across 183 2/3 innings of work.

Connor Norby Sat Feb 22 1:10pm CT

Miami Marlins second baseman/third baseman Connor Norby is eyeing to hit 30 home runs during the 2025 campaign. The 24-year-old is slated to be Miami's everyday third baseman during the upcoming season. He made his MLB debut last summer. During his first 45 MLB contests, Norby went deep nine times and held a .236/.294/.438. However, once he joined Miami, after being traded from Baltimore, he posted a higher .247/.315/.445 slash line. Under the hood, he generated a strong 14.8 percent barrel rate and a 47.0 percent sweet spot rate. However, he did strike out at a hefty 33.0 percent rate. Across 247 career games at Triple-A, Norby has held a strong .497 SLG. Fantasy managers should expect Norby to have an everyday role in an MLB lineup for the first time in his career, which makes him an intriguing late-round middle infield option.

    From RotoBaller

Blake Perkins Sat Feb 22 1:10pm CT

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Blake Perkins (shin) suffered a shin fracture during batting practice. He fouled a pitch off his right leg. Manager Pat Murphy said the outfielder is expected to be sidelined for at least 3-to-4 weeks and may not be able to return to games until May. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during camp but should not expect him to be available for the opening month of the campaign. Last season, Perkins logged a career-high 121 games and held a .240/.316/.332 line with 13 doubles and six home runs. He swiped 23 bags. Perkins was expected to make the Opening Day roster as a depth infielder but now may open the campaign on the injured list. As a result, Manuel Margot, who the team signed on Friday, could have a viable path to open as the No. 2 center fielder behind Garrett Mitchell.

Spencer Strider Sat Feb 22 1:00pm CT

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider (elbow) threw a curveball during his recent side session. This was the first time the right-hander mixed in the curveball during a session. Strider began using this pitch in the 2024 season before being shut down after undergoing UCL surgery. However, his new pitch was not the reason he needed to undergo surgery. Before being shut down last summer, the 26-year-old posted a 7.00 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP across nine innings. During the 2023 campaign, Strider held a 3.86 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP across 186 2/3 innings. He tallied an impressive 281 punchouts (most in the NL) and served up 58 free passes. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during camp, as he could return to action early in the 2025 season. Seeing him begin to mix in different pitches is a great sign. When he does return, he should be viewed as a high-end option, especially when looking for strikeouts.

Taylor Trammell Sat Feb 22 12:50pm CT

Houston Astros outfielder Taylor Trammell (calf) suffered a right calf strain while running the bases on Friday. Brian McTaggart of MLB.com noted that the outfielder is expected to be sidelined for "a little bit." Trammell was traded to the Astros from the New York Yankees earlier in the offseason in exchange for cash considerations. Last summer, Trammell appeared in just 10 MLB contests (split with the Dodgers and Yankees) and held a .143/.250/.143 line. During the 2023 campaign, Trammell held a .130/.286/.326 line across 22 contests with the Seattle Mariners. Given this recent injury and lack of success in the majors, the 27-year-old will likely open the campaign in the minor leagues.

    From RotoBaller

Alex Cobb Sat Feb 22 12:30pm CT

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Alex Cobb (hip) played catch on Friday. Chris McCosky noted that his hip is not "all the way over the hump, but it feels a lot better." The 37-year-old was shut down earlier this month due to this injury. However, seeing him slowly begin baseball activities is a positive sign. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status, but he is expected to miss at least a month of action. Last season, Cobb only logged 16 1/3 innings with the Cleveland Guardians due to numerous injuries. During this short stint, Cobb held a 2.76 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. In 2022, Cobb posted a 3.87 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP across 151 1/3 innings with the San Francisco Giants. With Cobb expected to miss some time, top prospect Jackson Jobe should be viewed as a front-runner to open the season in the rotation.

    From RotoBaller

Donovan Solano Sat Feb 22 12:30pm CT

Seattle Mariners first baseman Donovan Solano is expected to join the team on Saturday. Solano has missed the early portion of camp due to visa issues. However, given that he only missed a brief period of camp, Solano should not be in any danger of missing Opening Day. Earlier in the offseason, the 37-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Mariners worth $3.5 million. Reports suggested that the team views Solano as a primary first baseman. Last season in San Diego, Solano made most of his starts at the hot corner but did see 26 opportunities at first base. Across 96 contests, Solano held a .286/.343/.417 line with eight home runs and two stolen bases. Fantasy managers should expect him to operate in a platoon role at first base alongside Luke Raley.

    From RotoBaller

Maikel Garcia Sat Feb 22 12:00pm CT

Kansas City Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia is batting in the leadoff spot on Saturday afternoon when the Royals face the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 24-year-old underwent an offseason surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow. However, seeing Garcia already in spring training action suggests his recovery process was not serious, and he will not face any limitations. Last season, the infielder posted a career-low .231/.281/.332 line with seven home runs and 37 stolen bases. However, he did generate a strong .260 xBA, which suggests that he should see some positive regression in 2025. Garcia typically was placed in the leadoff spot last season, but with Jonathan India now on the roster, Garcia may have to earn this spot in spring training. If he does continue to bat in this spot, he could be a strong contributor for runs, batting in front of Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez.

    From RotoBaller

Esteury Ruiz Sat Feb 22 11:50am CT

Athletics outfielder Esteury Ruiz is in the starting lineup for their spring opener on Saturday afternoon. Ruiz will cover left field and bat in the six-hole. Ruiz only appeared in 29 contests for the Athletics last season as he was limited by a wrist injury. He ended the campaign on the 60-day injured list. Across his small stint, Ruiz swiped five bags and held a .200 AVG. During the 2023 season, Ruiz posted a .254/.309/.345 line with an impressive 67 stolen bases. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during spring training, as he will likely be competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Ruiz will likely compete alongside prospect Colby Thomas for a corner outfield spot. If he does earn a spot, he will have value in deeper formats, given his elite speed upside.
