Johan Oviedo Tue Jul 22 12:00pm CT

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo (elbow, late) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session at PNC Park on Monday and meet with team doctors and coaches, according to interim manager Don Kelly. Oviedo made his fourth minor-league rehab start with Double-A Altoona last Friday and allowed an earned run on three hits while walking none and striking out three in 3 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old was able to get up to 53 pitches in his latest outing, which means he probably will need several more rehab starts before the Pirates feel comfortable letting him make his 2025 big-league debut at some point in August. Oviedo could move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis for his next turn. The Cuban hurler hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2023, when he went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 158 K's and 83 walks in 32 starts.

Samuel Basallo Tue Jul 22 11:40am CT

Baltimore Orioles catching prospect Samuel Basallo (oblique) will begin a hitting progression this week with hopes of returning for Triple-A Norfolk this weekend, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Basallo is working his way back from a right-oblique injury that has kept him out of action in the minors since July 13, but he has managed to avoid a stint on the injured list so far. The O's are definitely going to play it safe with the No. 9 overall prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. The 20-year-old Dominican backstop has been slowed by several injuries in 2025, but he's still hitting .264/.383/.591 with a .975 OPS, 19 home runs, 48 RBI and 40 runs scored in 62 games with the Tides. Baltimore has so far resisted the urge to call Basallo up to the big leagues despite a rash of injuries at the catching position this year, but they might not be able to keep him away for much longer.

Kerry Carpenter Tue Jul 22 11:20am CT

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (hamstring) did running drills at full speed on Monday at Comerica Park, and his next step will be going on a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. "Everything is going really well," manager A.J. Hinch said. Carpenter is expected to join Toledo for their series against Triple-A Indianapolis in the next two days. Depending on how the 27-year-old feels in games in the minors, it's possible that he could come off the injured list and rejoin the big-league squad for this weekend's series against the Toronto Blue Jays, which starts on Thursday. Carpenter hasn't played since June 29, though, so it's likely we won't see him back with the Tigers until sometime next week. When he's ready, Carpenter will return to being an everyday player for the first-place Tigers.

Bryce Miller Tue Jul 22 11:20am CT

Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller (elbow) will either throw a second live batting practice session or make a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, per MLB.com. Miller threw 25 pitches in his first live BP session on Saturday while using all his pitches. He came away feeling good, which is why he's ready to take the next step later this week as he works his way back from right-elbow inflammation that landed him on the 15-day injured list on June 7. Because of how long the 26-year-old has been out, he'll likely require at least a couple rehab starts before rejoining the M's starting rotation, which means we probably won't see Miller until August. It's been a disappointing 2025 season for Miller after posting a 2.94 ERA last year. Through 10 starts, he has a 5.73 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 39:23 K:BB in 48 2/3 innings.

Tanner Scott Tue Jul 22 11:10am CT

Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed closer Tanner Scott (forearm) was pulled from his outing on Monday in the series opener against the Minnesota Twins and will "most likely" land on the injured list, according to manager Dave Roberts. Scott grimaced after releasing a slider and felt a "sting" in his left forearm. He will go for an MRI exam on Tuesday morning, at which point we should have a better idea of how long he might be out. But the Dodgers' already prevalent need for bullpen help just increased with Scott's injury. The 30-year-old, who is in the first year of a four-year, $72 million deal, has struggled to a 4.14 ERA with seven blown saves in 26 tries in his first 46 appearances with L.A. Kirby Yates entered for the final two outs on Monday for the save, but Alex Vesia could also be a candidate for saves with Scott injured. Evan Phillips is out for the season, and Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen are all on the IL.

Mitch Keller Tue Jul 22 10:10am CT

The Toronto Blue Jays have interest in trading for Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Mitch Keller, according to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Keller has also reportedly been the subject of trade discussions with the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. The 29-year-old righty is under contract through the 2028 season at an average annual value of $18.5 million. In 119 innings pitched (20 starts) in 2025, Keller has logged a 3.48 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts. His 18.7% strikeout rate is his lowest since a five-start sample in 2020, but his 0.68 HR/9 and 5.5% walk rate are both the best of his career. A trade to a contender would certainly help Keller's win outlook, as he's recorded just three wins this season despite his solid overall numbers.

Gabriel Arias Tue Jul 22 9:50am CT

Cleveland Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias (ankle) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on July 18 and should be back "pretty soon," according to Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. Arias was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain on June 30. In 281 plate appearances before getting hurt, Arias slashed .231/.293/.369 with six home runs, 31 RBI, 28 runs scored, and three stolen bases. The 25-year-old hits the ball hard (10.6% barrel rate), but has a major swing-and-miss problem (31.3% strikeout rate). Arias will be battling Brayan Rocchio for playing time at shortstop upon his return. Rocchio is a standout defender, but has hit just .207 with one home run in 158 plate appearances this season.

    From RotoBaller

Lane Thomas Tue Jul 22 9:50am CT

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas (foot) is progressing "a little slower" than the team expected, according to Guardians manager Stephen Vogt. Thomas was placed on the 10-day injured list in early July due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He recently received a pain-killing injection over the All-Star break. Thomas has had a rough season in 2025, slashing .160/.246/.272 with four home runs and four stolen bases in 142 plate appearances. The 29-year-old has posted the lowest barrel rate (4.8%) and hard-hit rate (30.1%) of his career so far this year. Thomas' speed (32 stolen bases in 2024) is a big part of his value to fantasy managers, so a nagging foot injury is bad news for his outlook the rest of the way.

Rhett Lowder Tue Jul 22 9:40am CT

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Rhett Lowder (forearm, oblique) is "going to start throwing this week" but will "need a pretty big buildup," according to Reds manager Terry Francona. MLB.com reports that the team is hopeful that Lowder will return for the Arizona Fall League and/or have a "semi-normal winter." A right forearm strain delayed Lowder's start to the season, and an oblique strain suffered in late May has kept him out even further. The 23-year-old made his major league debut in 2024, pitching to a 1.17 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 22 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings (six starts). Lowder will remain off the fantasy radar in 2025, but he's a dynasty-league stash and a name for re-draft managers to monitor heading into 2026.

    From RotoBaller

Hunter Greene Tue Jul 22 9:30am CT

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene (groin) is scheduled to throw two innings in the Arizona Complex League on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. If all goes well for Greene in the ACL, he'll make his next appearance with Triple-A Louisville on July 29. Greene has been on the 15-day injured list since June 4 due to a right groin strain. In 59 2/3 innings (11 starts) before getting hurt, he was 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 73 strikeouts. His 24.9% K-BB% rate was the best of his career, and his 2.95 xERA backs up his stellar surface-level numbers. Greene is a fantasy ace when healthy, and it appears as though he's on track for an early-August return barring any setbacks.

Lars Nootbaar Tue Jul 22 9:20am CT

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar (ribs) is not able to swing a bat without feeling pain in his left ribcage, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis-Post Dispatch. Nootbaar was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left costochondral sprain on July 13. He had been playing through the injury since late June, and it appears as though it will continue to impact him for the foreseeable future. In 386 plate appearances this season, Nootbaar has slashed .227/.332/.381 with 12 home runs, 37 RBI, 50 runs scored, and four stolen bases. It's quite possible that this rib injury derailed his season even before he was forced to miss time. Nootbaar was hitting .248 with eight home runs and four stolen bases at the end of May, but has hit just .183 with four home runs and zero steals in June/July.

Alex Bregman Tue Jul 22 9:10am CT

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman (quad) returned on July 11 from a quad strain that caused him to miss 43 games. However, he's playing at less than full strength, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Cotillo notes that the team has instructed Bregman to pick his spots to run the bases at full speed, prioritizing his presence in the lineup over all-out hustle. In 22 plate appearances since returning from the injury, Bregman is hitting .227 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. In 248 total plate appearances this season, the 31-year-old Bregman is hitting .292/.371/.539 with 12 home runs, 38 RBI, and 34 runs scored. Since speed was not a huge part of his profile to begin with, Bregman's injury limitations should not impact his fantasy outlook significantly. However, he may suffer a bit in runs scored, and he could be at an elevated risk of re-injury.

Brice Matthews Tue Jul 22 8:50am CT

Houston Astros second baseman Brice Matthews had struggled in his first four games in the majors, going just 1-for-15 with six strikeouts, but he broke through with a huge game on Monday night to power the Astros to a 6-3 win in Arizona. Matthews smashed his first two major league home runs, going 2-for-4 with two homers, two runs scored, and five RBI. Both his blasts came against Zac Gallen. The 23-year-old prospect totaled 10 homers and 25 stolen bases in 73 games in Triple-A this season, hitting .283 with a solid .393 wOBA. He has plenty of big-play potential with both his power and speed and should get a chance to claim the everyday job at second base the rest of the season. Matthews is a fascinating prospect to watch in standard leagues and is worth adding in deep leagues based on his upside.

Kirby Yates Tue Jul 22 8:30am CT

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Kirby Yates recorded two outs against the Twins to close out the Dodgers' 5-2 win on Monday night. He entered with the bases loaded and got Kody Clemens out on a sacrifice fly before retiring Carlos Correa on a fly ball to end the game. He came in to replace Tanner Scott (forearm), who left with an arm issue that seems likely to land him on the injured list. Yates could be one of the Dodgers' top options to close games while Scott is out, although Blake Treinen (forearm) is also nearing a return and could get the call for some save situations as well. If Yates is available, he's definitely worth adding if you're looking for saves on the waiver wire while we see how the Scott situation settles out after Tuesday's MRI. Yates has 43 strikeouts in his 30 1/3 innings this year along with a 3.86 ERA and 3.82 FIP. He has 13 holds to go with his three saves, but Scott's injury could change his role going forward.

    J.P. France Tue Jul 22 8:20am CT

Houston Astros starting pitcher J.P. France (shoulder) made his first rehab appearance on Monday in the Florida Complex League. He worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk while also picking up two strikeouts. France has been out all year after undergoing surgery to repair a torn right shoulder capsule last June. The 30-year-old righty will continue to ramp up as his rehab progresses and is working towards a return later this season. Since he missed over a full year, he'll need an extended rehab, so he's not quite ready to return yet, but he's on his way. He is one of several Astros trying to work their way back to the rotation and joins Spencer Arrighetti (thumb), Luis Garcia (elbow), and Cristian Javier (elbow), who are all on rehab assignments as well.

Benny Montgomery Tue Jul 22 8:10am CT

Colorado Rockies outfield prospect Benny Montgomery is looking to bounce back after battling injuries. The former 2021 eighth overall pick went 3-for-4 with a walk on Saturday, offering a glimpse of his upside. Now healthy and playing regularly at Double-A, Montgomery brings an intriguing mix of speed, size, and raw tools. While inconsistency and health have slowed his rise, the 22-year-old still has time to put it together. With the Rockies thin on long-term outfield options, Montgomery should get every chance to prove himself. He remains a watch-list name for dynasty managers in deeper leagues.

Max Muncy Tue Jul 22 8:10am CT

Athletics infielder Max Muncy (hand) left Monday's game against the Rangers after being hit on the hand by a pitch by Jack Leiter. X-rays were negative, but the team did not make a decision on whether he'll need a stint on the injured list. His availability will likely depend on how much swelling develops in the injury overnight. Muncy has filled in all around the infield this season for the A's, hitting .215 with nine homers, a stolen base, and a .280 wOBA. He's hitting .250 with four of those home runs in July. If he's out for a few days, Luis Urias could get more playing time at second base since the team just sent Zack Gelof to Triple-A to get more regular at-bats as he continues to work his way back after his own injury. For now, Muncy is day-to-day, but stay tuned for further updates on his status going forward.

    From RotoBaller

Jonathon Long Tue Jul 22 8:00am CT

Chicago Cubs first base prospect Jonathon Long is making noise at Triple-A, slashing .317/.399/.505 with 14 home runs and a 19.9% strikeout rate. The 23-year-old's bat has been his calling card, though defensive struggles at left field and third base have likely cemented him at first. Long could earn a call-up if he keeps hitting when rosters expand in September. While not a household name, his offensive profile is worth monitoring in deep dynasty and NL-only formats. Long's blend of contact and power makes him one of the Cubs' most intriguing under-the-radar prospects this season.

Brandon Woodruff Tue Jul 22 7:50am CT

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff continued his strong return from a shoulder injury with a strong outing against the Mariners the Monday. He did leave early due to injury, but the good news is that it was a calf cramp and nothing related to his arm. Woodruff said that it should be a "non-issue" going forward, and manager Pat Murphy said the team opted to play it safe. Woodruff cruised through six innings on 62 pitches and is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA, 2.85 FIP, and 23 strikeouts in his 16 1/3 innings since returning from the injured list. Woodruff's win gives the Brewers 11 straight wins, and they became the first National League team with 60 wins this season. The veteran righty's next outing is currently lined up for Sunday afternoon against the Marlins.

    From RotoBaller

Tanner Scott Tue Jul 22 7:40am CT

Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Tanner Scott (forearm) had to leave Monday night's win over the Twins after feeling a "sting" in his forearm, according to manager Dave Roberts. Roberts said that Scott will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the nature and severity of the issue, but he added that it seems "more than likely" that Scott will end up on the injured list. The 31-year-old lefty has worked 45 2/3 innings out of the bullpen this season, compiling a 4.14 ERA, 4.03 FIP, and a 1.16 WHIP. Scott has 19 saves and eight holds on the year, and while he is out, Kirby Yates and Alex Vesia will likely split closing duties for the Dodgers with Blake Treinen (forearm) entering the mix for saves once he comes off the injured list, which could be very soon.
