Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Alex Lange (lat) allowed a run and two hits while walking none and striking out one with Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday as part of his minor-league rehab assignment, according to MLB.com. Lange threw a hitless inning with a walk and a strikeout for the Mud Hens on July 20, but he will need to throw on back-to-back days in the minors before the Tigers activate him from the 60-day injured list. The 29-year-old had surgery in June of last year to fix a right-lat avulsion, but he's nearing his return and could be ready to return to the majors in early August. The former first-rounder by the Chicago Cubs had a career-high 26 saves in 2023 with Detroit before getting injured in 2024. Lange has proven himself in high-leverage situations before, but expect the Tigers to ease him into their bullpen to close out the 2025 season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Friday that they placed outfielder Alek Thomas on the bereavement list and recalled outfielder Jorge Barrosa from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Thomas will most likely miss the entire weekend series in Pittsburgh at PNC Park against the Pirates. Jake McCarthy is making the start in center field and will hit seventh in Friday's series opener against Pirates right-hander Mike Burrows. The 25-year-old Thomas is most useful for his range and glove on defense in center field. In his fourth year with the D-backs, he's hit a middling .246/.294/.366 with a career-best .660 OPS, five home runs, 26 RBI, 33 runs scored and five stolen bases in 292 trips to the plate over 90 games. Although McCarthy has gone just 13-for-93 (.140) on the year, he has more offensive upside in fantasy than Thomas.

Chicago Cubs right-hander Javier Assad (oblique) had a nice showing in his first minor-league rehab start on Thursday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, tossing three shutout innings with one hit allowed, no walks and six strikeouts. It wasn't a bad showing at all, even if it wasn't against great competition, for Assad's first outing since April. The 27-year-old has been out all season, so he has a ways to go in his rehab assignment and won't be an option for the big-league club until at least mid-August, if not later. It's unclear if Assad will have a rotation spot waiting for him when he comes off the injured list, but he could have an opportunity based on the fact that lefty Justin Steele (elbow) is out for the year and Jameson Taillon (calf) is also on the IL. Still, Assad offers limited fantasy upside with a career 7.6 K/9 in 294 innings.

Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Cobb (hip) received injections in his left hip during the All-Star break to treat remaining inflammation in his hip, per MLB.com. Cobb then completed a bullpen session on Tuesday. The veteran has dealt with pain in both of his hips, but manager A.J. Hinch said that the team remains hopeful that Cobb will be able to return later in the season. The 37-year-old has been out all season, and fantasy managers should not be holding out the same hope that the Tigers are. Cobb has already had surgery on his left hip, and the fact that he's still dealing with issues isn't a good sign at all. We wouldn't be surprised at all if Cobb doesn't make it back to pitch for the Tigers this year. Even if Cobb does return to the Tigers this year, he could be relegated to a bullpen role. There's virtually zero upside here.

The New York Yankees are acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday in exchange for pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, a source tells MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. McMahon will join the Bronx Bombers as their starting third baseman as the Yankees look to get back to the World Series this fall. The 30-year-old McMahon is leaving one of the most hitter-friendly parks in baseball in Coors Field for Yankee Stadium's short porch in right field, but he'll be leaving the worst team in baseball for one of the better ones. McMahon was an All-Star for the first time last year but has hit just .217/.314/.403 with 16 home runs, 35 RBI, 42 runs and a league-leading 127 strikeouts in 100 games in 2025. A change of scenery and a better lineup around him could certainly help McMahon finish the year much stronger.

Washington Nationals outfield prospect Robert Hassell III continued to swing a hot bat as he went deep for the second-straight contest on Thursday evening. Facing Triple-A Scranton, the No. 11-ranked prospect in D.C. went 3-for-5 with a long ball and a stolen base. This outing also extended his current hitting streak to seven games. During this impressive stretch, the 23-year-old has posted a .464/.545/.714 slash line with eight RBI, two home runs, and two stolen bases. Earlier this season, Hassell made his MLB debut but struggled, holding a modest .218/.228/.269 slash line with a .497 OPS across a 21-game stint. Given his impressive production at Triple-A, Hassell should be in the mix to return to the majors in the near future.

Toronto Blue Jays left-handed pitching prospect Adam Macko tossed five shutout innings en route to picking up the victory over Triple-A Columbus on Thursday evening. In this outing, the left-hander allowed just one hit with two walks. He struck out five. This was a much-needed bounce-back outing for the southpaw as he entered this game holding a hefty 10.93 ERA with a 2.64 WHIP across his last 14 innings (four starts). Through 30 innings with Triple-A Buffalo this season, Mack has struggled to find consistency, sitting with a 6.90 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP across 30 innings. Earlier in the season, the Blue Jays noted that Macko could be in the mix for a promotion later in the season. For now, fantasy managers should leave him on the waiver wire. However, if he were to continue to turn the corner, he could be worth a look in deeper AL-only formats.

The St. Louis Cardinals are hopeful that outfilder Lars Nootbaar (ribs) can start a rehab assignment as early as next week, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. Nootbaar has been dealing with a ribcage/intercostal injury over the past month and has been on the injured list since July 13. Nootbar is currently slashing .227/.332/.381 on the season with 12 home runs, 37 RBI, 50 runs scored, and four stolen bases. While he has been on the shelf, Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker have been seeing more consistent playing time in the outfield, while Ivan Herrera has been occupying the designated hitter spot. The Cardinals currently sit two and a half games back in the NL wild-card race, so they will be looking to get Nootbar healthy as soon as possible. Fantasy managers will want to keep tabs on how he progresses next week and if he begins a rehab assignment or not. Once he is back in the lineup, Nootbaar is a decent outfield option in leagues that have five outfield spots.

The New York Mets acquired left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday in exchange for minor-league pitchers Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster, league sources tell SNY's Andy Martino. The move comes after Soto picked up his first save of the season on Thursday against the Cleveland Guardians in the first game after the O's placed closer Felix Bautista (shoulder) on the injured list. The 30-year-old southpaw mostly served as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen for Baltimore this year and will likely do the same with his move to the National League East. It's bad news for fantasy managers that just picked Soto up off the waiver wire in hopes that he'd see more save chances with the O's. With Soto now gone, Seranthony Dominguez is the overwhelming favorite for saves in Baltimore until Bautista is able to return.

After the Arizona Diamondbacks traded first baseman Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, the D-backs will likely turn to Pavin Smith (oblique) as their everyday starter at first base going forward, even though he's currently on the injured list with a strained right oblique, according to MLB.com's Manny Randhawa. The 29-year-old lefty hitter recently resumed taking dry swings, but it's unclear when he'll begin a minor-league rehab assignment or when he'll return to the big-league roster with added playing time. And when Smith does return to Arizona, he might only be starting at first base when the team faces right-handed pitchers. The former seventh overall pick in 2017 out of Virginia has hit .261/.371/.446 with an .817 OPS, eight homers, 28 RBI and 33 runs in 222 at-bats, but he has just 17 at-bats against southpaws in 2025.

At the moment, the New York Mets believe that right-hander Clay Holmes can blow past a reasonable innings expectation and remain effective into October as a starting pitcher, according to The Athletic's Tim Britton. If the playoffs were to start tomorrow, Britton writes that Holmes would be part of the rotation, although it might be in a piggyback situation with Frankie Montas. However, Holmes' innings jump is going to be considerably bigger than Luis Severino's and Sean Manaea's were last year, and they both hit a wall in the NLCS a year ago. If Holmes does eventually hit a wall, the Mets will then seriously consider moving Holmes to a relief role. Another option is the Mets trying to control Holmes' innings at some point in the second half, whether it's with shorter starts or a move to the bullpen. Fantasy managers will have to act accordingly if Holmes hits a wall.

The Athetic's Tim Britton wouldn't be shocked if New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos were traded in the next week, but he also doesn't expect him to be traded, mainly because his right-handed bat can be a useful complement to Jeff McNeil and Brett Bay, who both hit left-handed, on the infield. Vientos' plate discipline has been similar to his breakout in 2024, but his quality of contact has been way down this season. The ball just hasn't been coming off his bat as expected, and it's been a concern since spring training. The Mets are putting more of an emphasis on Vientos finding more barrels, and they are hoping to see some improvement over the next two months. The 25-year-old former second-rounder is hitting just .224 (57-for-254) with six home runs and 25 RBI in 72 games. However, he's also had a hit in each of his last five games heading into this weekend.

The Atlanta Braves announced on Friday that they reinstated infielder Austin Riley (abdomen) from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Fantasy managers will want to check back later, but Riley should be right back in the starting lineup for Friday's series opener on the road in Texas against the Rangers and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi at Globe Life Field. Fantasy managers will also be hoping that Riley will pick up where he left off in July after missing the last two weeks with an abdominal injury. Riley definitely lengthens Atlanta's lineup and gives them more punch in the middle of the order. Get him back into starting lineups.

Cleveland Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias (ankle) could be activated for the team's series this weekend against the Kansas City Royals, according to MLB.com. Arias has been on the 10-day injured list since June 30 due to a left ankle sprain, but he's played in four games for Triple-A Columbus since starting a rehab assignment on July 18. The 25-year-old logged 281 plate appearances for Cleveland before getting hurt, posting a .231/.293/.369 slash with six home runs, 31 RBI, 28 runs scored, and three stolen bases. He'll be in the mix for everyday playing time at shortstop upon his return to the big leagues. Cleveland has mostly used Brayan Rocchio at short in Arias' absence. Rocchio is a slick fielder, but he's recorded a miserable .542 OPS in 169 plate appearances so far in 2025.

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Blake Snell (shoulder) will make his "fourth and likely final" rehab appearance for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says that the team will discuss whether to have Snell make another rehab outing or rejoin the major-league team after he gets through Saturday. Snell went down in early April with inflammation in his left shoulder after just nine innings pitched. Snell has thrown nine innings across three rehab outings to this point, allowing two earned runs while walking just one and striking out 17. He has the stuff to be a fantasy ace upon his return, but health and inconsistency have been issues for the talented left-hander throughout his career.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho (hamstring) is having his rehab assignment moved from Single-A Dunedin to Triple-A Buffalo and could rejoin the big league club on Monday for their series against the Baltimore Orioles, according to Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Varsho has missed time this season due to both shoulder and hamstring ailments, and he last appeared for the Jays on May 31. In exactly 100 plate appearances, he's slashed .207/.240/.543 with eight home runs and 20 RBI. Varsho's speed may be somewhat limited as he works his way back from a hamstring injury, but he was a major power threat before getting hurt. His stellar defense could keep him in the lineup every day, but the Blue Jays also have Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw as centerfield options on the big league roster.

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen (forearm) took a big step in his rehab on Thursday when he completed the second night of scheduled back-to-back appearances. Treinen threw 12 pitches in a perfect inning with two strikeouts for Triple-A Oklahoma City. In six innings at Triple-A, Treinen has not allowed an earned run, struck out nine, and walked just one. The 37-year-old has not pitched for the Dodgers since mid-April as he works through a forearm issue, but it appears he could be close to a big league return. Los Angeles recently placed Tanner Scott (elbow) on the 15-day injured list, so there's a clear opportunity for Treinen to earn saves at the back end of the Dodgers' bullpen. Of course, Los Angeles has been linked to just about every prominent relief arm on the trade block, so there could be added competition for Treinen in the pen when he does return.

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Cade Povich (hip) made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, throwing five innings and allowing two hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out six. Povich was placed on the 15-day injured list in mid-June with inflammation in his left hip. Thursday marked his third rehab outing, and he hit the 70-pitch mark, so his next start may come in the big leagues. The 25-year-old lefty threw 64 2/3 innings (12 starts) for Baltimore before getting hurt, recording a 2-5 record with a 5.15 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and 68 strikeouts. Povich has shown the ability to generate swing-and-miss (23.9% strikeout rate), but he allows far too much hard contact (50.8% hard-hit rate allowed). His pathway back to a regular role in Baltimore's rotation will become clearer if the Orioles trade away veteran Charlie Morton at the deadline.

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman (back) could begin a rehab assignment next week (July 28), according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. Gorman was placed on the 10-day injured list in mid-July with lower back pain and has since received a pain-killing injection. The 25-year-old has played every infield position other than shortstop for St. Louis this season. In 226 plate appearances, he's hitting .219/.310/.408 with nine home runs, 29 RBI, and 31 runs scored. There's no question that Gorman has power (.471 xSLG), but swing-and-miss continues to be an issue (30.1% strikeout rate). He's blocked off from everyday playing time by veterans Nolan Arenado at third base and Brendan Donovan at second base, but St. Louis may make a move or series of moves at the trade deadline that could free up some opportunity.

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Nestor Cortes (elbow) threw 93 pitches on Thursday night for Triple-A Nashville in his fourth rehab start. He allowed two runs (one earned) over 5 2/3 innings of work. He allowed four hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts in a 2-0 loss. Based on this outing, it appears that Cortes is fully ramped up and should rejoin the Brewers soon. The Brewers have a tough decision to make, as they have one of the best rotations in baseball in Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff, Jacob Misiorowski, Quinn Priester, and Jose Quintana. The highest ERA in that room is Quintana with a 3.49 ERA, which is respectable. The Brewers will need to decide if they want to deploy a six-man rotation or bump one of those starters to the bullpen. With Woodruff just returning from injury and the Brewers attempting to limit Misiorowski's workload, it appears on the surface that they will likely try to deploy a six-man rotation. Still, nothing is officially announced at this time. All that being said, Cortes is a proven MLB starter with a career 3.88 ERA in 576 innings pitched.
